Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S carburetor, carburetor engine, fuel inlet

Question
Engine Model 170402, Type 0714. This engine is on my snowblower. As soon as I engage the auger, the engine stalls. It's difficult working on the engine while it's on the snowblower.

It idles fine and only stalls when the auger is engaged.

It would be much easier to work on it if it was removed and set up on a workbench. Is there any way to simulate the engine being under a load such as when the auger is engaged, when the engine is OFF the snowblower?

Answer
Hi Jerry,

About your question re; putting the engine on the workbench - I would first try to work with it on the machine to save time and energy.

For the problem you've described I would go through the 'Low Power' troubleshooting steps.

Items to check out:

1.  Plugged Air filter,

2.  Throttle or Choke shafts worn

3.  Diaphragm damaged

Fuel System Problems

4.  Plugged Tank or Filter

5.  Damaged Adjustment Needles (carb)

6.  Incorrect float height

7.  Main nozzle restricted

8.  Dirty Stuck Needle- Seat

9.  Fuel Inlet Plugged

Possibly you might need to remove and readjust & clean the carburetor.

Check the exhaust for a restriction.

Check the oil level & oil type.

Hopefully these points will help you to start diagnosing the problem you are experiencing.

Regards,

Howard
