Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Pulley removal from crankshaft, pulley, keyway

Question
QUESTION: I have a B&S 31H777-0110. I need to remove the pulley from the crankshaft so I can lift the motor from the frame. The pulley as flattened surfaces as if designed for a wrench. Does the pulley screw off the shaft? If so, in which direction should I turn to remove it? Could it be reverse threaded? If the pulley does take a wrench; how do I keep the crankshaft from turning?  Thank you in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Chuck
There is a bolt in the center of the pulley that requires a socket. It should be either a 9/16 or 5/8, standard thread direction. Once the bolt is removed, the pulley slides off the shaft. Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Robert, thank you for answering my question. I did fail to mention in my original post that there was also an electric PTO at the very end of the crankshaft beyond the pulley that I successfully removed. It had the bolt you mentioned in your response. So, now I'm down to just the pulley but it won't budge. So, could the pulley be frozen or rusted on the crankshaft? If I could figure a way to to use a wheel puller is that all I need?  Thanks again, Chuck

Answer
The pulley could be frozen. Spray some lubricant (wd-40) all around the shaft and the pulley. The pulley has a notch in it that works like a keyway (like the flywheel key) Tap on the pulley and it should break loose. If you use a wheel puller, be very very careful since the pulley is usually aluminum and could bend.
