Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Homelite blower, lean mixture, gas cap

Question
Re:
Homelite blower, backpacker, UT08111

Problem:
Blower cranks fine. When I pull the trigger and hold it wide open, the engine runs wide open and then it comes back to an idle. It continuously repeats this cycle of idle/wide open while holding down the trigger. On occasion, this does not happen. The blower will run fine.

Things I've tried:  loosening the gas cap, changing the air filter, drained all gas out and cleaned the tank, mixed fresh gas (50/1), changed spark plug.

Thanks for any input.

Answer
Leamon

You may have to clean the carburetor as dirt gets in the high fuel port this will cause thid type of problem.

Easy things first, right? When the engine begins to loose power, crack open the gas cap... If the engine recovers full power, replace or service the gas cap. There is a vent mechanism in them to allow air in as fuel is consumed....

If that fails to make a difference, then.... Well, I'm gonna initially discount ignition problems since it slows and stops, rather than misfiring and dying.... But checking for spark immediately after it quits wouldn't hurt.... Sometimes coils die on being heated up....

The other probability is that the engine is running somewhat lean... A lean mixture causes the engine to run too hot, which will eventually lead to loss-of-power. The main mixture should be richened slightly.... Hopefully this machine has easily accessed mixture screws.... Lemme know if you need help with this.

How old's the fuel?
