Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine, briggs stratton engine, electronic ignition systems

Question
I have a 20+ year old rototiller with a 5 hp B&S engine. The engine will not start. I am getting only a faint current from the sparkplug wire. I have cleaned the magnet & all wires appear to be connected. What can I do to repair? Or what parts are likely in need of replacement?

Answer
If the first two digits of the code number are 80 or less then you have points in the engine.  Most likely the points need to be replaced or at least cleaned.  You need several special tools to access the points such as a starter clutch removal tool.

It is cheaper and eaiser to update the ignition system with a Nova II or similar electronic ignition system.  Plus, the electronic ignition systems are completely maintenance free.

Let me know if this helps.
