Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs vanguard 22 hp starter, air impact wrench, flywheel puller tool

Question
I found that I need to replace the starter gear on my rider.  I have taken the motor cover off and I still can't reach the one bolt that holds the starter in place.  Can you help me?

Answer
Is the bolt behind the flywheel?  If so, you will have to remove the flywheel. An electric or air impact wrench is a very handy tool  for removing and installing the flywheel nut.

You will also need a flywheel puller tool to remove the flywheel.  You can sometimes use other tools for a flywheel puller; I use a generic old-school wheel puller tool. It is basically a universal puller with long grooves for using on different flywheels.

Goole flywheel pullers and you will find several pullers which will give you an idea on what you need.

Let me know if you have any questions on removing the flywheel.
