Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro Lawn Mower Self Propelled Will Not Start!, motor shaft, tecumseh engine

Hey David!

I have a 2002 22" Toro Recycler Lawnmower (Model #20018) with a Tecumseh engine. I just got this mower off Craigslist and this thing won't start! So I went to Home depot and got some Oil, a new filter, and a new spark plug. I also lubricated it, charged it, cleaned it (all around, rags and Q-Tips), and drained the oil and gas. I have Invested $20.00 into it. I paid 30 and wish not to go over it. Now I try to start it and it works when I start it up manually, but when I do self propelled/electric start, it sounds like a fan,it tris to start but...can't. Can you help me?

If I understand your question clearly you can start the mower with the recoil start but not with the electrical start-Correct?

It sounds like the starter gear may be gummed up or stripped.  If its gummed up, cleaning the starter motor shaft will do the trick.  if the gear is stripped of course it will need replacement.
