Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S recoil starter pawl failure, recoil starter, air filter oil

Question
B&S Model 21A902 Type 0149 E1 Plate-Pawl Friction 695128 Pawl-Ratchet 281505S
The engine sometimes yanks the pull cord during starting. Recently to Pawl failed. I replaced the Pawl and Plate and had a similar yank during starting. The plastic Plate is now bent and the Pawl does not engage the flywheel.
Is there are reliable repair for the Plate / Pawl?
Is there a way to prevent the yank? Almost like a back fire.
The engine is pretty well maintained with air filter, oil, blade sharpening at the beginning of the season.

Thanks

Answer
Hi Oscar
Two things could be happening here. First, make sure the blade is tight. If it is, then check the flywheel key to see if it is sheered or distorted. Either one of these conditions can cause the engine to kick-back and damage the starter pawls.
