Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): battery keeps draining, switch problem, exide

Question
Hello,

I am not a pro in any way, so I apologize up front for any confusion or lacking info.  I have a Toro rider motor.  I was riding it a couple weeks ago; I stopped and turned it off, and it wouldn't crank when I tried to restart it.  I jumped it with my car, and it started, so I moved it to the shed for the time being. A few days later, I tried to start it, but it wouldn’t crank, so I charged the battery to 100%, and it started twice while hooked up to the charger.  24 hours later, I tried to start it, and it wouldn't crank. I hooked it up to the charger, and it said it had drained to 47%.  I charged the battery to 100%, and it started while hooked up to the charger.  I cut the grass without any problems for about 2 hours, and then I turned it off.  I tried to start it again, immediately, and it would not crank.  Any ideas what would be causing this problem and how to test it?  Thank you.

Answer
You likely just have a bad battery.  WHat I would recommend you do is take the battery to an auto parts store and have it load tested.  They'll be able to tell you if it's any good or not.  If it does turn out to be good, then you could have a wiring or switch problem, but since it goes dead so fast, I think you're going to need a battery.

If you do need a battery, stay away from the cheap ones.  Interstate and Diehard are my preferences but Exide is okay too.  Thanks, PK.
