Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): recoil only retracts part of the time, push mower, model number

Hello,

I have a MTD push mower, model number 115-418C129. The recoil only retracts part of the time, I don't think the spring is broken because it still works part of the time? Not sure what to check, I would appreciate any advise.

Hi Alice,

If the string doesn't go back inside when it should the spring may be broken.  In your case the rewind works intermittently, so it may be that the string is binding upon itself.  Failing that it may be that the recoil has some debris stuck which might impede it's operation.  You may have to take it apart to inspect it.  Make sure you follow the shop manual for this procedure.
