Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawn mower smokes, hp briggs, puff of smoke

David i have a craftsman 6.75 hp Briggs self propelled mower.when i start it up a puff of smoke comes out, then operates okay with no smoke.whats wrong?

I believe what your experiencing is nothing more then a little bit of oil drain back that sometimes remains in the valve area.  I am assuming this is on a OHV engine correct?  otherwise it could be a bad valve seal, or even a bad valve guide, but I really wont worry about it.  Make sure your oil level is at the proper level and live by the old saying "dont fix it if its not broke"!
