Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): swisher predator 24, briggs and stratton, debris screen

Question
QUESTION: David, i'd like to know what you think of the swisher model wb11524 brush mower with a briggs and Stratton 11.5 hp engine.it's the cheapest one of the lot at $1,229.00, but is it worth it.thanks john

ANSWER: John:

Both Swisher and Briggs have been around for a long time.  I have some experience with this unit.  I am assuming it has an INTEK engine on it.  The only complaint I can ever recall on this unit is that an enduser complained about excessive vibration.  Personally i think the vibration came from a bent blade.

The only other thing I can add is that this engine needs to maintained properly.  Be sure to change the oil regularly and make sure that the cooling fins and debris screens are not plugged.  If they are plugged the engine will overheat and will have a very short life.

IF you take care of it it should last you many years.

Have fun with your new Swisher.!!

David

QUESTION: do you know if this engine has an oil filter?also where are the cooling fins and debris screen.

Answer
Without the exact model type and code number i cant answer this, however some Inteks did offer this oil filter feature.  The debris screen is the screen located near the pull rope.It may even be bolted above the recoil assembly.  Some units will have an external screen and the internal one located under the recoil. Where it goes in and out of the engine.  It needs to be kept clean.  You clean it by blowing the debris away with compressed air or vacuuming it with a shop vac.

The cooling fins are on the cylinder near and around the spark plug.  There will be fins on the cylinder head and also on the cylinder itself.  This is the only way the engine cools so of course you can see what happens if the fins are plugged.  Air is not directed into the cylinder properly and overheating results.
