Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): transaxle - 935-057a on a Craftsman 917.258540, peerless transaxle, craftsman 917

Question
I just had my transaxle go out on my lawnmower.  I had a service tech offer to replace it with a used one.  $200 for the part and $100 for the labor.  I am pretty handy and I want to know how extensive it is to replace this myself.  What should I pay for a used one (transaxle)? I have seen them new for as low as $295 plus $35 S&H.  Also, where might I find a service manual for future repairs?  Thank you so much for your help.  Have A Blessed Day!

Answer
The Tecumseh/Peerless transaxle manual is available from most small engine parts suppliers. P/N 740045, around $10.

I wouldn't give more than $25 for a used transaxle myself. It's not terribly difficult to replace.  $100 labor is about what we charge to swap one out. Thanks, PK.
