Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki engine, blown head gasket, kawasaki engines

Question
The mower engine, Kawasaki FD390V on a JD 285 mower, was setting idling made a pop and died. The right cylinder has no compression, the left does. The starter spins the engine over but obviously does not start. Did that engine have a weak point in them, or is this a problem with that particular engine? As a wild guess, what might be the problem, and the parts cost to fix it?

Answer
There's no real weak points in any of the Kawasaki engines.  Some don't like the plastic cam gears found in some, but they're really pretty trouble-free.

You could have a broken rod, a stuck valve, blown head gasket, and several other things, it'll take some inspection and possibly disassembly to find out.  If you pull the plug for that cylinder and the piston isn't moving, then you probably have a broken rod.  Otherwise, you'll need to pull the valve covers and keep going until you find the problem.
