How do I replace a shift handle on a 12-hp rear-engine Snapper
model 33128BE? There must be an easy way to clamp the spring
attached to the mechanism to which the shift handle is
affixed, right?

Sorry to take so long to get back to you, my hughesnet has been acting up since the storm the other night.

If it is the spring I think you are referring to, I used my Briggs valve spring compressor, you should be able to get a comparable one at the auto parts store for 20 bucks or so.
