Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): charging issue with a exmark, exmark dealer, hp kohler

Question
P.K last week while I was mowing my exmark just died (25 hp kohler CH25S) so I purchased a new battery came back home finished mowing no problem. I went to start it mid week to mow again and it was dead. I went to my exmark dealer who told me to put on a voltage regulator so I did. I mowed today and all was good until I tried to restart the mower so I could clean it off and it was dead. Ant suggestions?

Answer
What you'll need to do first is establish the location of the problem.  You can do this with a multi-meter.  Charge the battery and check the voltage with the key off.  Then check it again with the engine running.  There should be a 1-2 volt jump while running. If there's no jump, then power is not getting to the battery.  Then you have to check the lead from the regulator that recharges the battery.  If there's no voltage, then the problem is between that lead and the stator under the flywheel.  If there is voltage, then the problem is between that point and the battery.

If it's between the regulator lead and battery, disconnect the lead from the battery or solenoid, and check for continuity from the regulator lead to the lead that connects to the battery or solenoid.  Most of the time it's nothing more than a corroded connector.

If there's no power from the stator, then there's a series of tests you can do to check the stator.

Try this and let me know what you find.  Thanks, PK.
