Transmission Ring
QUESTION: John I wrote you a few days ago regarding the transmission of my Toro walk behind mower model 20017 and how it had a loud grinding sound when engaged. I decided to take the bottom access part of the transmission off and look inside. What I found is in the picture I sent you with this message. I looks like some kind of ring that has become very damaged. What I want to know is it worth the trouble and expense to replace that little transmission? It only costs around $38. If I go that route can you give me any tips on how to replace the transmission? Amy help would be appreciated. Thank you. Jim Caldwell

ANSWER: As I recall, it was clicking and wouldn't pull backward.

I have replaced a couple of those and they are a pain.

You need to remove the fluids and filters, and buy some big snap ring pliers, and  just follow it from there.

QUESTION: What fluids and filters are you referring to? And what would the snap ring pliers be used for? Thanks again for all your help. Jim Caldwell

Answer
You should remove the oil and gas, as the mower will have to be
turned upside down, and remove the filter so it won't get oil soaked.
The snap ring pliers are for the snap rings.  If you try to remove them with anything else, you will ruin them and have to buy new ones.
For a parts blowup, google milica lawn and garden, and use their parts lookup, or toro master parts viewer.
