Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs and stratton 42A707 twin L, briggs and stratton, mtd riding mower

Question
I have a 1998 mtd riding mower and the engine started tapping loudly while cutting grass and then started clanging and then died. when I try to start it ,it spins rapidly,I pulled the plugs and have no compression, the oil was full, can I fix this or do you think I need a new engine, I only have 400 hours on this engine. thankyou, dan

Answer
If you are real lucky, it is fixable, but you would have to disassemble and inspect what the damage is first.  Using 10w40 oil
is one possible cause of the breakdown, it breaksdown and can destroy an engine that is full of oil, it cooks down and locks up bearing surfaces.
Unfortanately, that engine has been discontinued for a while, so
finding a new replacement or shortblock would be hard to find.

But I would tear it down and see what is damaged.
