QuestionI have a TORO Super Recycler walk behind mower, Model# 20464, Serial # 5902244, 5.5 HP. Do you know where I can find the correct service manulal? I have found several onj EBay, but they say for a 1991 model- is this close enough? I need to replace the head gasket and/or base gasket and an oil seal. It's leaking oil on the deck. Are these difficult for a somewhat experienced weekend hobby mechanic? Any special tools needed? Thanks for your time!

AnswerThe service manual you need is Briggs and Stratton P/N 276781. This can be ordered through most Briggs and Stratton dealers.
The base gasket requires disassembly of the engine and isn't a simple job. They very, very seldom leak, so I would be certain it needed to be replaced. The head gasket also is fairly difficult as this is an overhead valve engine and resetting the valves will be necessary. It too will seldom leak, and when it does, there will usually be a problem with the way the engine is running.
The valve cover gasket is very easy to replace and leaks occasionally. The oil seals aren't terribly difficult either. No real special tools are absolutely required.
I'd be certain I knew where the oil was coming from before I tried anything. You can clean the engine and then spread some corn starch around and any leaks will be easy to locate. Thanks, PK.
