Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): crack intransaxle case, craftsman lawn tractor, cracked case

my father has a 2002 craftsman lawn tractor model # 917.272075. I  help him this spring with dropping the deck cleaning it up and changing the blades. put all back start it up tried running it, wile it was moving with blade engaged everything ran good, than when shifting from 2nd to 3rd it stop moving. shifter was lock would not let me change gears at all forward or backward! I shut it down tried pushing it brakes lock still will not shift! push to driveway then it was Abu to shift it to natural. started up did a test drive and it run fine? stop check things started it up run it, everything fine so my dad cut the front lawn. everything seem good!
couple days later he went to cut the yard half way thought the front he noted some oil when he crosses the driveway, turns out the Trans case has 2 inch crack in bottom of it!! scenes it out of warranty do i repair or am i better off replace the hole thing! he did say had a problem 2 season ago that it would not shift. your insite on want went wrong!

You can look at the trans blowup and prices at searspartsdirect.com.
You would have to tear it down to see what all was damaged, and figure the costs from there.

Generally, not shifting well is due to moisture and rust in the transaxle, and a cracked case is usually due to excessive weight/
stress, such as towing things, or a real heavy passenger, or added weights.

While rebuilding is possible, it is very messy, but very do-able..
