Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro Hydrostatic Transmission, hydrostat problems

Question
QUESTION: Hi - I have a Toro/WH 267H garden tractor.  The transmission seems to overheat (actually, the tractor stops moving - it seems to me like it's overheating) after about an hour of steady work (I have a few hills on my property).  I've checked the transmission fan but it is spinning.  If I let the tractor sit for about a half hour, it runs fine for another hour or so.  Please help!  Thanks!

ANSWER: Is the fan in one piece with all the blades present?  Have you tried to clean the transaxle?

QUESTION: Yes, the fan is one piece with all its blades and it spins when the motor is running.  I gave the transmission a good cleaning a couple weeks ago, so I don't think that's the problem.

Answer
It could be overheating or the oil may have lost its viscosity.  The belt could also be stretching.  Every once in awhile that will happen.

If it is the transaxle, I'm afraid there's not a lot I can do to help you in this sort of forum.  It's just too involved a process to fit into the way this site works.  The usual causes of overheating are either a busted fan or a lot of dirt built up on the transaxle.  Low fluid level, weak oil, a worn swash plate, worn piston springs, worn pistons and/or cylinders, bad internal filter and a few other things might cause this sort of problem. I believe you have either a Tuff-Torq or a Hydro-Gear transaxle but I'm not certain about that.  If it's a Tuff-Torq, you can go to their website and they have parts lists and I think manuals online.  I don't believe Hydro-Gear has their manuals or parts available to the consumer.  My shop is a Hydro-Gear Service Cente and Dealer and I seem to recall them requiring you to go through a dealer for parts and such.  I know I'm not allowed to publish or sell the manuals, although we can sell parts.  I wish I could be of more help. Thanks, PK.
