Jaguar Repair: xk120 rebuilt, car mechanic, air ratchets

Question
how many hours does the book rate say it should take to do
a complete r/r on a 1953 xk120 motor? Where can I go to find such information?

Answer
Hi Skip,
I have experience on the 120,140 and 150, E type  and on up to the XJ-6 ser III.
I looked through everything I had on paper for flat rates and only found back to the "E" type. I remember the R&R of the engine being a little harder on the 120 than on the "E" type just because of the lack of space to work in. I found a Mitchell flat rate for the "E" type and as far as bolts and components, the 120 was just about the same as an "E" type. Mitchells states that R&I of the engine for an "E" type at 12.1 hr. (not counting over any components) and 53.2 hr. for an overhaul (not including any machine work)
In my opinion the 53.2 hr. for the overhaul is about right for any of the 6 cylinder Jags from the 120s up to the Ser III XJ-6. However, I think the R&I (R&R as we called it) Mitchell quotes for the "E" type is too low to apply to a 120 Jag. If I had one to do today, I would want to see a flat rate of about 16 hr. (just to R&R).
I started as a car mechanic in a Jag dealership in 1960 and did a lot of work on 120s, 140s and 150s.
I think even with air ratchets today I think at 16 hr. for a plain R&R, you will earn it. I could not find anything in print though.
If anyone out there has anything in print, post it to me so we may be able to have something in print.
I hope this helps.
Howard
