Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cub Cadet Rider Mower problems, cub cadet lt 1042, wire harnesses

Question
Yes sir, thanks for any advise. 2 problems with my Cub Cadet LT 1042 Lawn Tractor (Kohler model# SV590, 19 HP). (#1) It's only 3 years old, 77 hours of use and in very good condition, but last year it started blowing fuses for no apparent reason. It doesn't seem to be temperature related, it does it hot or cold. I'll go to start it and it just clicks and you can see the fuse blow as soon as you turn the key. What I've done is to thoroughly check for bare, or burnt wires (none) and start wiggling and pulling on wire harnesses and terminals trying to jar something loose and then suddenly it will just start. I don't know if anything I did actually made it start again. I have a huge box of fuses and I just keep wiggling wires, then try a fuse. Anyway, it seems sporatic and has taken hours each time I go through this. (#2) After I got it started again, it seems to have lost all it's power. It runs really well, no sputtering or misses, no smoke, but it won't climb the slightest hill now. I don't know if anything electrical would cause this problem. I was wondering if a worn or stretched out Drive belt would do this. It looks a little cracked in spots and probably should be replaced soon anyway, but would this cause the tractor to have no power? I've cleaned the air cleaner's pre-filter (air filter was very good condition), thoroughly sprayed the carburetor out with some cleaner, put new gas in, and no improvement. But again, the engine runs very well, just won't climb the slightest hill.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
DS

Answer
A slipping belt will certainly keep the mower from pulling hills.  As would transmission problems.

The electrical problem is a wire gone to ground somewhere.  This could be extremely difficult to locate.  The next time it happens, I would just start going through them all with a ohmmeter or a shorted wire tester until I found the one shorted out.
