Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): too much oil, hp model, dip stick


Question
I have a sears 6 hp. model number 917.387300. The dip stick broke. I went to change the oil and didn't know how much oil to put in. I put in 20 oz. and now the thing is smoking like crazy.

What should i do?

Hello John, what you need to do first is remove the broken dipstick out of your crankcase, and buy your self a new dip stick. It is not that difficult to remove the side cover. You do not want leave the dip stick in where the crankshaft is etc.. And for the amount of oil your manual should provide that information. Generally most people put in 10w 30. Most manufactures are stringent, when it comes to this, always refer to your manual for safe keeping.
