Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Engine wont start, garden tiller, starter clutch

Question
B&S 130292. Engine is on a garden tiller. Replaced the points, etc. yesterday. Pulled starter cord, but the engine wouldn't start.

I sprayed some starting fluid in the plug hole, replaced the plug and pulled the starter. The engine started with the 2nd pull.

When I tried again without starting fluid, it wouldn't start, but did start the 2nd time I sprayed fluid in the plug hole.

Seems fuel isn't getting through. What's your best guess at what the problem is?

Last year, the one time I got it running, fuel was leaking around the very end of the Pulsa-Jet carb.

Another question about the same tiller. For several years, when running, it sometimes makes an ear piercing "screeching" sound for a few seconds. When belt dressing is sprayed on the belts, that seems to help some. Are the bwlts worn or is there another cause for this noise?

Answer
If you can get it to start and it stays running by priming, it could be that the old carb's choke is badly worn, and not choking enough.

Or else the gas in the tank is getting old, and it will not start burning as easily, and the ether just starts the process.

The screeching noise is coming from the starter clutch, which you removed when replacing the points.
Take it back off and clean it inside, and polish the shaft
it rides on with emory cloth.
