Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): belt adjustment craftsman rider, lawn mower parts briggs & Stratton model number discountonlineparts lawnmower parts

Question
I replaced the drive belt and now the mower will not shift, so to change gears I have to shut mower down and then select the gear I want and re-start. Is there a belt tension adjustment, seams to me the cluth is not engageing all the way to allow the shift to happen.

Answer
Hi Brian, the belt is too tight which causes the transmission to remain in gear. You need to check and make absolutely sure you replaced the belt with the correct one and routed it correctly. In most cases there is little if any adjustment on belt tension to trans. The tension is provided by idler pulleys. If you possibly replaced one of the idlers with one even 1/4" larger in diameter this can happen.  If you need a new lawn mower belt or pulley we will have what you need at http://www.discountonlineparts.com/lawnmower/  Good Luck.
