Suzuki: 97 Suzuki Sidekick 1.6L, suzuki sidekick, clutch cable

Question
I have a manual transmission.  I was on the road in a traffic jam and it became difficult to get my vehicle into gear.  I put it into gear and it immediately started moving, even with the clutch pedal depressed.  My clutch cable was torn, and I replaced it.  But now when I depress the clutch, it seems that the clutch cable isn't moving the clutch, as I can't get it into gear at all.

What might it be?  Is there something I can do.  I can't seem to find the linkage.  Someone suggested that I check it, but I'm no mechanic.  Is there something that I can do to avoid a tow to the shop.

Last time things seemed to be tight getting into gears and someone we met at a get together got under the vehicle and tinkered for 60 seconds and seemed to fix the problem temporarily.  "Linkage," he said.  But where is that and what might it be otherwise.

Thanks.

Answer
The "linkage" is merely the clutch pedal (it's a pivoted lever arm), and a lever arm at the transmission, which both connect to the cable.  There are adjustments possible where the cable end attaches to the lever arm at the front of the transmission (on the right side, if I remember correctly, and where the cable housing is fastened to the engine about six or eight inches forward of the transmission.  It's simple.  The problem you are experiencing is related to having too much slack in the cable.  If you adjust so that most, but not all of the play is gone, you should have a normaqlly functional clutch again.  How, you ask?  Simple.  There are two nuts on the end of the cable at the engine fastening, and you change the free play (slack) there, just like adjusting the brake cables on a bicycle.
