Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cant start tiller, rotary corporation, 6 digits

Question
QUESTION: B&S engine model 130292, Type 0159. This is about the tiller I had problems with last year. Got it started once, enough to get the gadren tilled, but couldn't get it started the rest of the summer.

I believe last year I replaced the points, condenser, etc. I'm not sure if that was before or after I has it running the one time.

This year it still won't start. I replaced the plug but that didn't help.

With another engine, a 140000 series, when I take the plug wire off and set it near the engine, there is a very clear spark bewtween the plug and engine.

When I do this with the 130292 there is no spark that I can see. I even held onto the end of the coil wire that snaps onto the plug and pulled the starter. No shock, so must be nothing coming through the coil wire.

Does this mean a bad coil? Would bad points, condenser cause this? How about a sheared flywheel key? Could the key have sheared after starting the tiller last year, then when I shut it off, kept it from starting again?

ANSWER: Hello Jerry:

>>From your Description it Sounds Like the Point Set Requires Replacing.
>>I Suggest you Replace the Point Set with an Ign Module (Rotary Part # 8687) from Rotary Corporation. Most Small Engine Service Centers have these in Stock or they can Order it for you. This will Eliminate the Point Set and Prevent the Problems Caused by them each Year.
>>The ONLY Reason for an Engine Using a Point Set Ign Not to Fire is Usually a Bad Condensor or Corroded Contacts on the Point Set.
>>A Coil without the Internal Ign Module will Rarely Require Replacing.
>>The Flywheel Key will Simply Cause the Plug to Fire Out of Time, but it will Still Fire.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Example: XXXXXX-XXXX. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Select Sectional Index. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.

QUESTION: Went to the Rotary Corporation website and search for part # 8687. Part 8687 is a rubber tire. I tried chaning the number around, but still couldn't find anything close to an ignition module.

Could you double check the number?

Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello Again Jerry:

>>Sorry about the Confusion. Apparently I Inverted the Numbers.
>>The Correct Part Number is Rotary #8786.

QUESTION: What's the difference between the B&S #398811 Magnetron Coil and the Rotary # 8786 ignition module? They look different. Does one have an advantage over the other?

Answer
Hi Again Jerry:

>>The Magnetron Unit is a Complete Coil Assy with a Built in Ign Module (the newer mowers use this unit) and the Rotary Ign Module is an Add on to the Coil.
>>The Cost is the Only Other Difference in these 2 Units. The Magnetron is Approximately $45.00us and the Rotary Ign Module is Usually about Half that Price.
