Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere LT160, corn starch, oil spots

Question
Hi, I just purchased a used JD 160 believe it to be around 7,8 years old, hydro. with forward and reverse pedals. 540 hours. Looks to be in excellent condition but I am getting two oil spots from under the the engine, looks like the right side.
I'ts a 16hp Kohler engine. The engine starts right up and the mower seems to run fine. I talked to the John Deerre dealer where I purchased it and he said to try to see where it is coming from and call him back. What would you think? I can still return it, I'm a little nervous now. I bought it for a good price 750.00 with bagger. If a new seal is needed about how much would that be? Do you think the dealer should be obligated to  repair it? Many thanks for your anticipated reply.

Answer
I couldn't tell you what obligation they might have to fix it as I don't know what sort of agreement you had with them or your State's laws about such things.

You can find the leak by spraying the area you think it's coming from with carburetor cleaner until it's pretty clean.  Then once it dries, throw a bunch of corn starch on the area and that will show you where the leak is coming from after a day or two.

As to what it would cost to repair?  That will depend on the leak.  It could be from $20 on up.  If you can pinpoint the leak I can give you an idea about what we would charge in my shop.  Thanks, PK.
