Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): john deere 317, john deere 317, battery ignition

I was given a john deere 317 but it sat in a pasture for two years but it ran when it was parked.Ive tried the basics new gas clean carb new oil turns over fine but no spark with new plugs.coil is hot,not a mechanic so if you could point me in the right direction i would be greatly appreciated.

Looking at the mower at jdpartsonline, you have been given one jewel
of a tractor, which when you get it running, will be a valuable
tractor to own.  It says the engine is an Onan P218G, which is an
industrial quality, but very expensive engine.  Unfortunately, I very
rarely work on Onans, so I am not the best one to help you, I will see if I can find anything online.  It says it is a battery ignition,
so then it runs off of a distributor, and a module that replaced points, or in fact points, I will see if I can find any info online and amend my post here, or else send me a response that I can reply
to.
