Hi, firstly thanks for what you do - have read many posts...
but not seen why my mower will start, first pull of the season, but now and all last season starts to misfire after 40 yards or 40 seconds (a bit less in long grass) and then die. Not fuel supply as runs freely and carb holds more than enough for this. Smells - too rich? Should I suspect timing as I got backfires and actual flames out of exhaust in the long grass of first cut? If I wait 1 minute I can run another short cutting. Exhaust manifold cool enough to touch at cut out.

Hi Collin, thank you very much!  We are here to help.  I would say check the diaphragm in the carburetor if equipped with one.  If not, it could be a head gasket leaking.  Check head gasket and the head bolts torque.  You should be able to find the head gasket, diaphragm, and all of your lawn mower parts  at http://www.discountonlineparts.com/lawnmower/  Hope this helped.  Thank you.
