Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda 2113, lawn mower parts discountonlineparts kohler courage lawnmower repair coil starter

Question
Hi Jon, I posted a query yesterday and fish reply:
I have heard it is possible to reverse the polarity of a
battery, but I have not seen it.  I would remove the battery, and if you did not have a multi-meter, take it to an auto shop store
and have them test it.
I have seen mowers with the battery on backwards do what you are describing, the "buzzing" noise was the starter turning backwards,
the gear won't jump up to engage the flywheel.

I removed the battery and used my power jump kit by connecting + to + and - to -, still when I turn the key the buzzing sound is on and the engine would not turn at all? Should i reverse polarity (+ to -?) or would I blow the whole thing :-). Any advice would be appreciated.
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,  you do not want to reverse the polarity period.  The buzzing sound could be that the starter motor brushes are bad and are not engaging.  If you are sure the battery is hot (fully charged) then remove the cover over the starter drive and try to engage the starter.  If the starter drive trys to move forward then the starter is weak so you might need to replace it. If the starter drive moves in reverse direction then somewhere the cables are reversed.  Correct this and try again.  If you need to replace the starter or any other lawn mower parts you can find them at the link listed http://www.discountonlineparts.com/lawnmower/
