Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 5.5 hp honda woodsplitter, lawn mower parts compression discountonlineparts discount flywheel MTD Wood

Question
i have a yard machines woodsplitter with 5.5 hp honda engine. i was splitting wood the other day and there was a small pop and the engine stopped. tried to restart and wouldnt start. it has new plug air filter and gas. drained carb and bowl in carb. pulled plug good spark. checked oil and thats good also. any ideas.

Answer
Hi Fran, check your compression. It is possibly valve adjustment related or the flywheel key has sheared. If the compression is still good. Remove the flywheel and check the key. The engine was probably overtaxed and sheared the key. The other alternative is valve lash or failure of something in the valve train. This is more likely and common in the small Honda on the MTD units.  Hope this helps.
