Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): jd 320 popping follow up, feeler gauge, valve stems

Question
I have been asking about the poping, tried to reply, but couldn't so I am posting as new. you asked if it was a soft popping or loud, it sounds kinda muffled, not a consistent pop, will pop through the carb sometimes a few times in a row, then sometimes as long as it's running. could you also explain how to adjust the valves? I'm new at kawasaki, done a lot with briggs though.

thanks
Sam

Answer
With the piston at Top Dead Center, loosen the lock nut or screw and the retaining nut.  Stick a .010 feeler gauge between the valve and rocker and snug down on the retaining nut until the feeler gauge barely slips in and out.

Personally, before adjusting valves I like to remove the pushrod and roll it on something flat to make sure it's straight.  I also will inspect the rockers and valve stems.

If you can try this, let me know what you get.  If you have trouble replying, my email and shop number is at my website which should be listed in my profile.  Thanks, PK.
