Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): COMPRESSION RELEASE VALVE, Kohler ACR

Question
I have a 2006 Toro LX500 Kohler Engine.  I took my lawn tractor for a service and they it has too much compression for the starter (150 compression reading), and they would like to replace the Compression Release Valve (not sure exactly what the part they identified was, except that it some type of crank shaft???)  i am concerned, being a female, that i may be taken advantage of.   they did pick up the riding mower from my home (and at that time i was unable to start it also, so i pushed it into the driveway for pick up. $40 for pick up and return delivery), the service(tune up) $85.. and now the other fix with the compression .. can you tell me if this sounds right.. and what this part may cost.. they won't tell me the price of the part.  thanks so much.

Answer
I'm assuming you have a Kohler Courage engine?  The ACR, (automatic compression release) parts are about $25-30.  The engine has to come apart to replace the camshaft and ACR and there's a few labor hours involved.

I don't know that I would go along with that diagnosis.  Adjusting the valve lash should come first.  It's possible that the ACR is bad, but on a 2-3 year old engine?  I'd have to see it.

I'd recommend sending it to a Kohler Authorized Service Center if you haven't already.  Or I'd ask around and see if I couldn't find a shop that's recommended by several people.
