Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): model number for the speed of my engine, briggs and stranton, overhead valve engines

Question
QUESTION: How can I make a 13hp Briggs and Stranton go faster? It is on
a older Craftsman? It is a belt drive. Would this be to much on the belt? HOW FAST WOULD THE MACHINE GO? IS IT CONTROLLABLE?

ANSWER: Hello Dan:

>>The Throttle Control Spring that is Attached to the Throttle Control Bracket and the Governor Arm has to be Replaced with a Higher RPM Spring or Shortened.
>>On Some Model Engines the Throttle Control Spring is Attached to a Piviot Tab and this Tab can be Bent Slightly to Tighten the Spring.
>>To be Sure I give you the Correct Maximum RPM's for this Engine;
>>Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Unit, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. If this is a Briggs and Stratton  Engine, then you can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine.
>>Thanks.

QUESTION: model#28m707
type#013701
code#9310154d

Answer
Hello Again Dan:

>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only are Required). Example: 28M707-0137-01. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Select Sectional Index. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.
>>Select the Controls, Springs, Fuel Tank, Hoses and Pump File.
>>The Governor Spring (#209 RED) should be Attached to an Ear that Piviots. This Ear can be Bent Slightly so the Spring is Tighter when in Throttle COntrol is in the Full Position or the Spring can be Replaced with a White or Black Spring (Color of the Springs Determine the Full Throttle RPM's) which will Increase the Engines Full Throtle RPM's Slightly.
>>I have Seen Charts that List Engine RPM's as High as 4600-4800, but the Maximum RPMs will Depend on the Equipment the Engine is Mounted On.
>>The Maximum RPMs for a Go-Cart are Different from the Max RPMs of the Engine if it is Used on a Zero Turn Mower, they would be Different if the Engine is Used on a Post Hole Digger, ect.
>>Not Knowing what the Engine is Powering, I Usually Suggest Setting the Maximum RPMs at No More than 3800-4200 even if the OEM Suggest 4600-4800 as a Maximum. The Engine will Last Longer and Provide Better Service and you Really Do Not Get ANY Benefite from the Extra 400 to 600 RPMs on the Engines Top RPMs.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
