Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): briggs 8hp, start after spray carburetor

Question
Hi. I have a John Deere R72 rider with a 8hp Briggs. The only way it will run is if you spray starting fluid in the carb. When the starting fluid burns off the engine quits. I pulled the fuel line off at the carb and gas came out so there is gas getting to the carb. Any thoughts on what to do next would GREATLY be appreciated. Thanks for you time.

Answer
Hi Mike,

Here are some checks that you can try for a wet spark engine (stall).

1.. Defective Spark plug possible.

2.. Obstructed air filter

3.. Fuel is stale or not correct

4.. Check flywheel for shearing or defect.

5..Carburetion defect > caused by flooding - Over-Priming.

6..  Check ignition system for intermittent electrical problem.

I think this would be a good start.
