Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 180 Transmission problem, ball bearings, aluminum case

Question
I have a JD 180 and when I bought it more the 5 years ago, it would slip out of 3rd Gear. Recently I have been noticing it being harder to shift and then last night trying to blow my driveway I started hearing some clacking noise and then it just seized up and I connot shift it. So I put it on snowboards and pushed it back into my garage. I am mechanically inclined and would love to do the job myself, can you give me some info on how to proceed. Can I but a rebuilt transmission?

Thanks In Advance

Answer
Hi Tony,
It sounds pretty major. All you can do is get it apart and see what's going on inside. Some trannys had ball bearings on the axel shafts. On most the axels rode directly in the aluminum case. If these wore out the tranny is scrap. Jack up the rear end and see if there is excessive play in the axels. Deere (like most mfg.)Buys their trannys from either Peerless or Spicer/Dana. I don't know of anyone who sells rebuilt/refurbished units. If you've got the time, grab your wrenches and go for it! Thanks for your question.
