Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Homelite 33cc Ranger chainsaw ignition replacement problem, spark plug wire, th image

Question
QUESTION: John, thank you very much for your help!

My chainsaw was running perfectly, then cut off and wouldn't restart.  No spark. The ignition was dead.  Ordered the replacement ignition #UP07865A that was specified for this saw on the homelite webpage.

There is an small wire coming from this new ignition that does not exist on my old ignition.  What do I connect that small wire to???

I don't want to mess up this new ignition.  THANKS IN ADVANCE!

-Tony

ANSWER: Hello Tony:

>>Can you Send me a Picture of the Point Set, Please. If I am Not Mistaken, the Wire is Attached to the Coil and Shut Off Switch Wire.
>>This Wire Grounds the Point Set and Prevents them from Sparking and Causing the Coil to Fire the Plug.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

ignition coil
QUESTION: John,
The original coil only has a spark plug wire and a tab.

The switch has two wires: one wire goes to ground, the second wire clips to the tab on the coil.

This new coil is the same, PLUS there is a short wire coming out next to the tab with a ring on the end. (With a ring connector like the ground wire of the switch)  THIS is the wire I'm not sure what to do with.  I don't want to burn it up with an incorrect connection.  I am attaching a picture.

Thanks again!

ANSWER: Hello Again Tony:

>>Most Coils have 1 Ground that is Attached to the Ign Coil Mount and and 1 Connected to the Kill Switch. The Ign Coil Ground that is Attached to the Ign Coil Mount is Usually Attached (Spot Welded to the Ign Coil Mount) at the Factory, so the Customer Only has to Attach 1 Wire.
>>Others are like yours and have 1 Wire and 1 Spade Connection. On these, the Wire is Attached to 1 of the Ign Coil Mounting Bolts and the Other is Connected to the Kill Switch. Attach the Grommet to the Coil Mount and the Spade Connector to the Kill Switch and the Unit should Fire Properly.

QUESTION: John,

I connected the wire to the bolt as instructed, but I'm getting nothing.  Any suggestions?   Thanks.

Answer
Hi Tony:

>>Are you Sure the Ign Coil is Mounted Correctly?
>>Can you Read the Words, "This Side Up/Out on the Ign Coil"? If a Coil is Mounted Upside Down, it will Not Fire the Plug. Even if you can See the Printed Words on the Coil, Turn the Coil Over and Try it with the Words Hidden. Sometimes these Coils Windings are Reversed for Special Application Engines (Engines that Run in Reverse Rotation).
>>If the Coil Does Not Fire the Plug after it is Turned Over, then Return the Coil and Exchange it for Another One.
