Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tuff Torq K66Y Questions, synthetic motor oil, differential lock

Question
QUESTION: My Craftsman Pro model (917.288740) came with the Tuff Torq K66y. I've been doing a bit of research and found lots of info: Illustrated parts diagram and parts ordering info to name a couple. There is an available Repair Kit for those who might be interested.

A couple of things have piqued my curiosity from reading this article: http://www.allbusiness.com/transport.../292699-1.html

The article discusses "Making available options, such as changeable oil filters, differential lock, outside hydraulics, ...[snip]... and foot or hand control were all features demanded by our customers." And later: "The model K66 is intended to replace the K65 for yard tractor and light-duty garden tractor applications. This unit can be equipped with external hydraulic outlets for power steering, lift and other applications. These outlets provide a flow of 3.7 gpm with a maximum pressure of 653 psi at 3400 rpm. ...[snip]... The K66 is similar in size to the K62 and in fact, uses the same upper housing as the K62. The main internal differences include the addition of a charge pump and strengthened gear train to cope with the demand of ground engaging, ...."

Anyone got any idea about adding/using these optional features?

The article further states: "All of the narrow drive transaxles use 10W 30 class CD motor oil. The K66 uses 5W 50 synthetic motor oil for ground engagement applications. The K46 has an oil capacity of 0.63 gallons while the K62 and K66 have a 0.66 gallon capacity and the K71 has a 1.22 gallon capacity. The K46 and K62 models use a non-changeable internal oil filter while the K66 and K71 units are available with an external changeable filter. All transaxles are prefilled and air bled at the factory."

Does this mean that my transaxle came from the factory with 5W50 synthetic or do I have to change to that oil myself? My owner's manual only says: "The transaxle was sealed at the factory and fluid maintenance is not required for the life of the transaxle."

That's enough questions for now.
Regards,

Dan

ANSWER: Hello Daniel:

>>What do you Need to Know about Adding the Accessories for the K66? Instructions for Attaching the Specificate Accessory is Included with the Accessory.
>>The Transaxle is Factory Sealed and Comes from the Factory with the 5W50 Synthetic Engine Oil Installed. You Do Not have to do Anything to the Transaxle.

QUESTION: Thanks for your prompt reply John.

The specific accessories I have in mind are the external filter, outside hydraulics and differential lock. I've looked on the Tuff Torq website and can't find/decipher what's needed for these items.

I guess the larger questions are:

1. If the transaxle is sealed, why is there an optional external filter?

2. Can the outside hydraulics be used to power a Johnny Bucket Sr.?

3. What benefit do I gain with a locking differential?

I'm a total neophyte. Can you tell?

Regards,

Dan

Answer
Hello Again Daniel:

>>LOL. No Worries. We All were at 1 Time or Another.
>>The ONLY Time you are Required to Add Any Oil the the Transaxle/Transmission is when you Service it. The Only Servicing you Perform on this Model Transaxle/Transmission is to Change the Oil Filter and Replace the Approximately 1 Pint of Lost Oil. The Breakdown for this Unit Shows a Reservoir and a Filter on this Transaxle/Transmission.
>>To View a Breakdown of this Unit Go to this Site Addy, http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action?sid=PSHx20080114x00001 and Enter the Model Numbers 917.288740 and Click Search. From this Page you can View Diagrams and Parts Lists for you Equipment Using the "View Sub Components" Section Near the Bottom Left.
>>I am Not Familiar with the Johnny Bucket Sr., so I Hesitate to Answer that Question. I Suggest you Try 1 of the Other Experts and get their Opinion.
>>A Locking Differential is Better because when 1 Drive Wheel Spins 1 to 1 1/2 Revolutions, the Other Wheel Locks and then Both Drive Wheels Turn Together to give the Unit Better Traction. When you Turn the Unit, the Lock Disengages so the Unit can Turn Properly (Inside Wheel in the Turn Rotates Slower than the Outside Wheel). The Differential Allows the Wheels to Turn the Different Rotations.
