Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Tecumseh HS40 oil leak., crankcase breather, breather vent

Question
I just picked up my father-in laws old Topflight snow blower with a tecumseh HS40 motor. It starts and runs perfect for a machine this old, however if has bad oil leak from the valve cover breather area. What do I need to do to address this issue. I have the parts diagram and parts list, are parts still available, or has this motor seen it's last snow bank? Thanks in advance for your help. Scott.

Answer
Hello Scott:

If the Crankcase Breather/Vent is Leaking, then 1 of the Following will be the Cause; 1- the Breather Gasket is Worn Out/Bad and Requires Replacing. 2- the Crankcase Breather Requires Cleaning. 3- the Compression Rings are Worn and the Blow By is Greater than Normal and the Breather Cannot Handle the Extra Pressure. This Causes the Oil to be Blown Out of the Breather Tube and into the Carburetor and will at Times will Blow Out the Breather Gasket. Parts are Still Avaliable from your Local Small Engine Service Center. The Gasket Should be a Tecumseh Part Number 31619A. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please.
