Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman engine 143.994510, horizontal shaft, vertical shaft

Question
The engine on my Craftsman Yard vacuum has a broken rod. The existing engine is a verticle shaft Craftsman 4.5hp - the latest model has a 6.5hp engine. I can't find a replacement engine from sears. Since the body of the machine is still in excellent condition, I would like to replace the engine with a 190cc B&S engine. Can you tell me if there is a compatible B&S engine?

Thanks,
Charles

Answer
Hello Charles:

As Long as the Crankshaft is the Same Length, Diameter and is Keyed the Same and has a Charging System (if this Engine has One), you can Use a B&S, Honda, Kohler or Any Other OEM Engine on the Market. You can Use this Site Addy to Assist you in Locating a Replacement Engine. http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1487 . Half way Down the Page you can Select Listings for Horizontal Shaft, Vertical Shaft and Liquid Cooled Engine Catalogs that are Designed to Help you Locate a Bolt Up and Go Replacement Engine for your Unit. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Good Luck
