Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): McCullogh Chain Saw, aluminum tanks, plastic tanks

Question
I have a McCullogh chain saw that runs fine, but has developed a leak in the fuel tank.  Should I attempt to replace the tank or is there a way that I can seal it to stop the leak?

Answer
Hello Don:

I Repair Gas Tanks ONLY if they are No Longer Available. You can View a Breakdown of this Unit at this Site Addy;
http://www.ordertree.com/cms/parts-lookup-help/73.html and Select the OEM (McCullough) and Enter the Model Number and Click Go. If No Results, then Select the Click Here for Help. Now Scroll through the Units Listed and Locate your Model. Then Select your Model and View
the Breakdown/IPL. I Suggest you Purchase a New Tank if Available. However, I have Found that the Plastic Tanks can be Welded or Patched with Fiber Glass. Ask You Local Automotive Parts Retailer if they can Suggest Someone to Weld Plastic for you. A Lot of Times the Tank can be Welded for a Small Amount ($10.00us). If Patching with Fiber Glass; I Usually Cover the Whole Tank with Fiberglass and Once the Fiber Glass has been Applied, Cured, Dressed Up; the Fit is Snug but the Tank will Fit Into the Housing (on the Models with the Seperate Tank). Once the Whole Tank has been Roughed Up, then Clean it with Alcohol and Do Not Touch it with Bare Hands. Use Disposable Rubber Gloves to Handle the Tank Until the Fiber Glass has been Applied and Cured. With the Cast Aluminum Tanks (these are Usually Part of the Case), Use a Drill Driven Wire Brush and Rough Up the Aluminum Case. Be Sure to Rough Up at Least 1" so there is Plenty of Area for the Fiber Glass to Bite into. Clean the Area with Alcohol and Apply the Fiber Glass Per the Instructions. After the Fiber Glass has been Applied, Cured and Dressed up; Primer and Paint the Patched Area. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
