Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs 17hp ohv engine smokes on start up, crankcase oil, oil seeps

Question
My engine has 430hrs on it but smokes for about 60 seconds on start up and then runs clean, no smoke. I know it's burning residual oil but can't seem to deternine the source- valves or rings. I've replaced the intake valve seal- no change. Compression is 75psi. Engine runs very smooth  through full RPM range.

Answer
Hello Jim:

I have Several of these Engine that Do the Same thing. I have Found that for Some Reason that Even B&S cannot Explain; a Small Amount of Oil Seeps by the Oil and Compression Rings and this is what Burns Off During the First 1 to 2 Minutes. The Amount of Oil is Really Slight and Usually is Not Noticed if the Crankcase Oil is Changed Per OEM Specifications. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
