Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1979 Toro 524 wont start., turn the screw, adjustment screw

Question
Hi Fred,
I’ve got it from a neighbor, who knows nothing about it. Last time I’ve started it in June, but now after sitting in the garage for over 5 months would not start. I prime, pull the choke out, the ignition key is in off position, the lever is in neutral, pull the starter… nothing. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Yes, if you let the fuel in the tank or in the carburetor for five months that's your problem even if you had conditioner in it.  The best thing you can do is drain the tank, remove the carburetor disassemble it and clean all air and fuel passages with a wire from a wire tie blow them out with carburetor cleaner and compressed air.  If a carburetor kit was not put into the carburetor I suggest purchasing one along new mounting gaskets installing the kit and reattach the carburetor using new mounting gaskets the adjustment screw that is on the bottom of the carburetor should be turned in until its seats and then out two turns.  Start the engine letter warm-up and adjust the carburetor.  Turn the screw in until the engine starts to lean out then turn the screw out until the engine starts to flood then make your final adjustment between those two points.  The ignition key has to be turned on to have spark.  Maybe first you should remove the spark plug reattach to the plug wire and lay it against the cylinder head.  Turn the key on and pull the rope you should have spark turn the key off and pull the rope you should not have spark if for some reason this is not working this way check the key switch with the continuity meter to be sure it is operating properly and if it is you may have to replace your ignition coil.  Check out these things and if you are still having an issue please contact me
