Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): MTD Snow Chief snowblower, briggs and stratton, small tank

Question
Hi Fred, I recently bought a preowend very lightly used Snow Chief snowthrower. It has a 5 hp 206 cc Briggs and Stratton motor that runs on the first pull. Upon prepping it for winter I see that the clutch or differential that is connceted to the motor has a small square head metal oil pulg and when I removed it the small tank looks to be bone dry. What type of oil can I put in here to lube it? My first instinct is to go with detergent 30 weight, in the Penna. area. Thanks

Answer
You're talking about the crankcase you can put 5w 20 in it if you are talking about the auger drive.  You would put 90 weight gear oil in it and the same for the differential.  Typically you would put the oil in the same hole and fill it till it runs out.  I hope this information helps you out if you need more assistance please get a hold of me with maybe a little more information.  If I could get the MTD model and serial number I may be able to look up an illustrated parts list for your snowthrower.
