Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Troy Built ..stupid.stupid..stupid mistake, safety switches, hey fred

Question
Hey Fred, while changing the battery I crossed the cables..I can't believe I did it but none the less I did it and now the mower will not start..any help would be appreciated.

Answer
The system should be protected by a fuse so the first thing to do would be to check your fuses.  If they are okay turn the key and if the solenoid clicks check to see if you of 12 V going to the starter motor.  If you do and the engine is turning over in you have no spark first be sure all safety switches are set an operating properly.  From there you would have to replace your ignition coils.  If the solenoid does not click then more than likely one of the wires in the harness melted through and is shorting the system.  With the key in the on position follow 12 V from the small connector on the solenoid through the entire safety system in the key switch and back to the other small terminal on the solenoid.  Somewhere along the way will find the problem.  I hope the information helps if not please get back to us for more assistance.
