Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brand new mower - storing for winter, weight oil, cylinder walls

Question
I just bought a Honda HRR216VKA and will probably not need to use it until the spring.  So it doesn't have any gas in it and I haven't checked to see if there is any oil in it from the manufacturer or not.  I'm wondering what I should do to keep it in the best condition possible during the winter months here in Minnesota.  It will remain in my garage which is not insulated so freezing temperatures will probably be the norm.
Thanks.

Answer
If the fuel system has not yet had fuel in it then the fuel system portion will be just fine with no attention needed. I would fill the oil to the specified level. I would remove the spark plug and add 2oz's of straight 30 weight oil to the cylinder through the spark plug hole, slowly pull the rope a few times allowing the oil to coat the cylinder walls. Then replace the spark plug, and let it be till spring. In the spring, you'd remove the plug once again, and give it a few sharp pulls to expel any oil in the cylinder, reinstall the plug, fuel it up, and start it up. Also expect in the spring for it to smoke some till it burns out any remaining oil from the cylinder................Tom
