Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mcculloch carb swap?, whipper snipper, air fuel ratio

Question
QUESTION: Gday. I have a Roadrunner III whipper snipper - weedwacker you call them? :) and I have traced a no-run problem to the carb, confirmed when I replaced the carb with one from Mcculloch model Eager Beaver 280. I need to know if I can run the beaver's WT231A D2 carb on the Roadrunner instead of the original WT312 G5? I don't want it to run lean or too rich and wreck the piston. Thanks.

ANSWER: First off, let me go on the record as saying, I always believe the correct parts needs to go on the right applications as per the manufacturers recommendations. But new ideas, and innovations also move us forward..lol Ok to the question, if a 2 stroke engine runs too rich, or worse too lean, damage could occur. Too lean it is lacking enough oil  in the fuel mixture for protection of the internal components, just the same as mixing your fuel mix wrong in your gas can. That wrong mixture will hurt any engine, with any carb on it. Now if with this other carb on there it seems to be running at peak performance at both low end, and at high end, then the mixture we assume has to be correct. If in fact the mixture is correct then it is being protected if the correct fuel ratio was followed when mixed in your gas can as per the equipments manufacturer. So, if you go with it, I'm not going to be responsible should your piston rings become welded to the cylinder. In the same right, I don't see where that will happen if the mixture is correct......Good Luck...Tom

QUESTION: Yep, thanks. did some more research, founf that they both have a 21.2cc engine displacement, so by rights either cabs should work well given both machines are specced for the same fuel / oil ratio and of course both nees the same air/fuel ratio. So yes, I will put other carb on and check spark plug once running, same a a 2 stroke racebike, and read the plug off full throttle /ignition cut run, see how it looks. Thanks for your time.

Answer
First off I don't change over parts with parts from other applications. Buy the right carb for the right product. Second off your on the other side of the world your "Roadrunner III whipper snipper" I never heard of. Read back through my answer, I said if the mixture was correct it should work. Can I give you a yes or no, like I said I don't mickey mouse parts to save money, most the times it's a loss of money in the end, my customers deserve their equipment repair the right way, the safe way. Want me to spend the day referencing manuals for you? What so you can go off and enjoy the day? You found the information didn't you? I don't mind helping people on here but not when they are to lazy to help themselves. Don't give a starving man a fish, give him a fishing pole, and teach him how to fish. I am at my shop checking this all day long and taking time out of my day to help others, while trying to also make a living. Sorry if I don't have all day to research your question, because your too lazy to.......... Tom
