Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): TDC/Valve Clearance, briggs stratton engines, briggs stratton

Question
Before I ask my question just wanted to let all the experts know, your knowledge of small engines and your wiliness to share it with the public is a life saver for the people who want to fix there equipment themselves, there is just something about making a engine run right!!. My question is this, I have study the head on the Briggs motor I'm working on (2004 17.5 OHV single cylinder engine) and to the best of my ability the intake valve appears to be the bottom valve if this is not correct please let me know. I trying to set the piston/crank to TDC so I can check the clearances but I'm having a hard time convincing myself I have the valves in the correct position. One of the other experts "John" is helping me a problem and he is leaning toward a valve issue, so can you explain to me the full proof way to set TDC John told me how to do it but if you would will you explain it one more time.

Thanks again,
Glenn

Answer
On most Briggs & Stratton engines the tops of the valves are different sizes and if you look at the seat you should be in detail, which one goes where.  The other way would be to look at and exploded view of the engine in the parts book.  Belt timing is critical to have correct timing and know that it's correct you would pull the engine apart and check the timing marks on the camshaft gear in the crankshaft gear with the valves springs and keepers in place.  Then check your valve clearance whatever it happens to be for your engine.  The other thing that will control valve timing flywheel key and if sheared the engine will not operate properly if start at all.  If you're going to go to all the work of pulling the engine down be sure to purchase a gasket set and install new gaskets when you reassemble the engine.  If you do not have the parts you and did not want to purchase a Briggs & Stratton service manual I would suggest going to your local library I know ours has many service manuals and it can be checked out or copied.  I hope this information helps best of luck on your project.
