Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Mcculloch powermac6, followup questions, exhaust port

Question
QUESTION: Site wouldn't let me ask any more followup questions about the chain saw we have been talking about so had to start new question.  Couldn't buy directly from mfgr and had difficulty ordering Rotary part number 8786 locally so I ordered Stens part number 440-465.  Should be same.  I'll install when it comes in in couple days.  Before disassemble today I cranked her up and ran it until it quit again and immediately checked for spark....there was good fire. doesn't seem to me that if there is fire it would be the condenser ???  What am I missing?  I'll install new module regardless.

ANSWER: Hi Again George:

Sorry About you Not being Able to Send Another Follow Up Question. This Site has a Rule about Follow Up Questions, but you can Start a New Thread Anytime you Want to. It Gets Hard to Track some of the Questions Threads for me, but I Don't Mind. If it Stalled and you Still had Fire, then the Ign Coil or Condenser is Good. Did you Inspect the Exhaust Port and Muffler? Did you Check the Exhaust Port and Muffler? If Either of these are Restricted with Carbon Deposits, then the Engine May Run at Idle but will Flood when you Try to Rev the Engine above Idle. The Following is a Basic Instruction File for Doing a Diagnostic on the Engine for this Problem. Any Input is Appreciated. **Remove the Muffler and Make Sure the Exhaust Port is Clear. If it is, then Try to Start the engine with the Muffler Off. If it Starts and Runs Properly, then Clean the Spark Arrestor Screen in the Muffler or Replace the Muffler if Required. Operate the Unit Until it Quits and then Check the Compression. If the Compression is Below 100 PSI, then the Rings May be Stuck or Worn Out. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

QUESTION: HI John,
The module came in today (Stens part # 440-465) with, wouldn't you know it, no instructions. I know the electrical hookup so long as the saw is negative ground as the module has pos and neg terminalsand you would reverse the wires if positive ground.  Can I assume it is negative ground?

Does not say where to mount it, probably because it is sort of a universal part for single cylinder engines. Can I also assume that it can be mounted anywhere that it or it's wires don't interfere with the moving parts and the coil/switch/module wire connection is not grounded?

Also I checked the fuel cap and the very small hole did seem to be partially plugged.  cleaned it out with small wire and compressed air.  Interestingly of the three power mac 6's I have, two fuel caps had very very small hole with number 7 on backside of cap and one had larger hole with number 10 on back.  why would there be two different size holes on same type saw's caps?

I'm gettin' to be a pain huh!  Hoping to finish it up tomorrow as going on vacation saturday.

Have a great day!

George

ANSWER: Hello George:

You are Not a Pain. LOL. The Wire from the Coil to the Point Set is Attached to the + of the Ign Module and the Other Wire of the Ign Module is Grounded to the Engine. The Shut Off Wire is Connected to the + of the Ign Module Also and will Ground the Ign Module and Coil to Shut Off the Engine. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

QUESTION: 2nd and third part of my above question.........

Can I assume that module can be mounted anywhere that it or it's wires don't interfere with the moving parts and the coil/switch/module wire connection is not grounded?

Also I checked the fuel cap for venting and the very small hole did seem to be partially plugged.  cleaned it out with small wire and compressed air.  Interestingly, of the three power mac 6's I have, two fuel caps had very very small hole with number 7 on backside of cap and one had larger hole with number 10 on back.  why would there be two different size holes on same type saw's caps?

Answer
Hi George:

1st- Sorry for the Delay. I was Researching Another Question and it Took Longer than Expected. 2nd- Sorry for Not Completely Answering your Question. I May have Gotten Distracted and when I read what I had Written I thought I had Answered it. That is No Excuse and I am Truely Sorry. 1- the Ign Module can be Mounted Anywhere as Long as the Wires are Out of the Way of Any Moving COmponents. Usually I Mount it to the Blower Housing. 2- It Deoends on the DOM of the Unit as to the Size of the Air Vent in the Gas Tank Caps. The OEM was Experimenting with Different Size Air Vent Caps for a While. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.
